How To Find Buried Invisible Dog Fence Wires

Invisible dog fence systems have been growing in popularity in recent years, and while they might be safer than traditional fences, they can still pose dangers to your pets. If you have recently purchased an invisible dog fence system, it’s important to know how to spot buried wires so that you can prevent electrocution and other injuries.

How Invisible Fences Work

Before troubleshooting an invisible fence on the fritz, it is necessary to know how these products work.

Invisible fences are an ingenious invention made for those who cannot afford or don't want a physical fence. Invisible fences require one to go through some steps to install them. For starters, one has to set up a perimeter line with a series of electrified wires around the area they want to guard against trespassing dogs. To make sure that this system works, you need to attach collars containing electronic pulses (or 'corrections') onto each animal living on the property.

When your dog gets close to the perimeter, they hear a warning noise meant to startle them back. If they don't, then there will be an electric shock coming from the collar which has a different strength depending on how much it was set at.

This correcting reaction will not give your pup pain. Most programmable collars will start off with a light vibration and go up to an extremely mild shock. Even the maximum-intensity setting is just as unpleasant as getting zapped by a doorknob after stepping out of your home without shoes on; in other words, it's more startling than painful.

This is the whole point of this program- to find out where lost pets are hiding and then bring them back home so they can live a full life in safety.

How to Find an Invisible Fence Using an Underground Wire Locator

There are many different kinds of wire detectors, but they do the same thing. Underground Wire Locators are able to detect the electric wire's signal below the ground. Some detectors can only pick up this frequency depending on how deep or close they're to the signal and other factors, so here's what you need to do if you want to map out an invisible fence using an underground wire locator.

Step 1. Prepare Wire Detector

There are two sections for a wire detector. First, the transmitter has to be plugged into the wire that you're trying to find. Insert a clamped wire into one of the nodes on either side, and you're all set.

One end of the wire detector is the receiver. With the transmitter sending out signals, the receiver detects them and converts them into electronic impulses.

Step 2. Turn to Cable Mode

When clamping the positive node to the positive wire, it's important to make sure that you activate the receiver by switching on its cable mode.

Step 3. Turn Volume On

Turning up the volume on the receiver, you'll be able to set it at the desired level.

Step 4. Start Searching

Dangling the receiver near the ground will cause it to emit a high-pitched sound if an invisible dog fence is near. When this sound increases, you know you're getting close to the wire.

Step 5. Mark the Area

You should either put up a flag or paint the area before planting flowers there - we recommend using Plant-Friendly Paint if you are worried about changing your landscaping. Once you've fully marked the area and mapped it out, use a measuring tape and create a perfect map.

How To Find An Invisible Fence With An AM Radio

If you're not looking to spend your hard-earned money on a wireless or electronic device that detects buried wires, there are other methods of determining the borders of an invisible fence. One way is through the use of an AM Radio. Follow these steps to set up boundaries with a radio.

Step 1. Collect Materials

You'll need one or two tools in order to find your missing wire. To start, you'll need a wire (any type will do). Then you'll need something that can use electricity to create sparks; this can be anything from a lawnmower engine to jumper cables or car battery cables.

You will require an AM radio. Anything that can pick up the frequency of an AM radio should work just fine. You might also need speakers or headphones to make sure you are getting a good sound out of your device.

Step 2. Connect Wire to Spark Plug

Secure the wire tightly around one of the spark plugs on the engine. You don't want to worry about this falling off while you're running it.

Step 3. Secure Wire to Hidden Wire

To find the wire, you'll need to peel away the protective shield from it in order to uncover what is inside. Look for wires wrapped around other wires and then cut those wires. You will want to tape or tie one of these wires back onto the wire that you are trying to find out information about - this wire should lead back towards your house somehow; attach it on the positive side if possible. To prevent an electric shock, make sure there isn't a fence nearby too close.

Step 4. Set AM Radio Frequency

Most radios operate at 530 Hertz but if you happen to tune in on a local station then you might need to adjust the frequency either higher or lower until it sounds like just white noise.

Step 5. Run the Engine

If you're done being patient, it's time to go ahead and turn the engine on. Hold up the AM radio and walk around your yard so you can feel for any trace of a signal. As you move closer to your target, it'll start getting loud enough to hear even when it goes quiet periodically- all because of how close you are.

Step 6. Mark the Area

Place a marker every few steps to mark the location of the wire. You can use anything from paint to flags, or even flowers! Once you're done, measure it with a measuring tape and draw out an accurate map for future reference.

How to Find a Break in Your Invisible Fence

There are many ways for you to find a break in your invisible fence. A few of them include using the AM radio method described above or using a wire detector like the Noyafa.

Step 1. Turn Off Fence

You'll want to turn off the fence first before anything else.

Step 2. Plug Transmitter to Positive Node

Twist the positive wire around one of the screws on the outside of your house or into an electrical box. To ensure that there are no shorts, make sure that you cut off any stray wires before installing them. Then twist another piece of wire around a screw that is driven into the ground in order to secure it properly so it doesn't fall out.

Step 3. Walk the Area

Search for breaks in the wire by turning the receiver on and walking along with it. Once you hear a sudden change in sound or silence, stop; this is where you'll find the break.
